Sport Facilities XXI Century

How is a skatepark created? The road from the idea to the first ride

We get a lot of messages from you asking: "Can you build a skatepark in my city?". The answer is: yes, we would love to! However, it is worth knowing what this process looks like from behind the scenes. As Techramps, we do not decide where the new facility will be built - the initiative always lies with the local City or Municipal Council. It is the authority that has to decide on the investment, secure the site and issue a tender, which companies like ours can enter to complete the project.

The construction of a professional sports facility is unfortunately not a "quick fix." It is a months-long (and sometimes years-long) process in which we support officials and local communities. In the following article, we will go through 9 key stages and try to explain what happens at each of them.

1. idea and start of investment

It all starts with a formal decision by the office, which is usually a product of community needs and land use plans. This is the moment when signals from residents (often relayed to councilors) reach the desk of officials and are included in the list of tasks to be analyzed. The office then determines whether it has a suitable site and whether such an investment fits into the local infrastructure development strategy.

Securing funds for the project (Stage I financing) 2.

In order to move forward, the municipality must secure funds in the annual budget for the development of the documentation and concept. This is a relatively small amount compared to construction, but without it, it is impossible to go further.

3 Identify site possibilities

Before any drawing is made, we need to know where we stand - literally. This stage involves a rigorous analysis of the chosen site. We check the lay of the land, the structure of the land (geotechnical studies), the availability of utilities and any legal restrictions on the plot. It is also crucial to check the neighborhood - whether the skatepark will not be too close to residential blocks and whether the site allows safe drainage of rainwater. Our role begins already here, when we help officials assess whether the land is at all suitable for such an investment.

4 Consultation and recognition of users' needs

A skatepark cannot be designed "in the dark." This stage is a dialogue with the local community. The authority must verify whether the neighborhood is dominated by fans of skateboards, scooters or perhaps BMX bikes. Should it be a street-type facility (stairs, walls) or a park-type facility (ramps, bowels)? Professional consultation avoids building a facility that no one will want to use. We support offices in having these discussions, translating the language of users into the language of technical feasibility.

5. selection of a designer

At this stage, the office launches the procedure for selecting a designer, usually in the form of a request for proposals or a tender for documentation. This is the moment when the municipality is looking for a partner with relevant experience in such a narrow specialization. One design office that specializes strictly in skatepark projects is Slo Concept. As part of the Techramps Group, Slo Concept focuses exclusively on sports and recreational facilities, ensuring that officials receive documentation tailored to specific disciplines, compliant with current standards and safe for users.

6 Preparation of the concept and cost estimate - the turning point.

This is the moment when dreams take real shape. The designer creates an architectural concept and 3D visualization, which precisely defines the layout of obstacles and the way to move around the facility. The most important element of this stage, however, is the preliminary investor cost estimate. Based on it, officials find out what funds they need to secure for implementation. Without a reliable estimate of the cost of materials, earthworks and specialized concrete work, the municipality is unable to plan expenses or submit a correct application for external funding. This is the foundation on which all further financial strategy for the investment is based.

7 Developing documentation and fighting for funds for construction (financing Stage II).

This is where the process often slows down and teaches patience. With the project ready and a concrete quote, the office begins to seek full funding for construction. This is the most difficult stage. The municipality must either apply for grants (e.g. from the Ministry of Sports or EU funds) or wait for the next fiscal year to set aside millions for implementation. These fundraising efforts sometimes take years.

8 Tendering and contractor selection

Once the municipality has a complete set of documents and full funding, it puts out a major construction tender. This is the stage of verifying the bids in terms of experience and portfolio. The authority must make sure it selects a specialized company that can handle the difficult technology of shotcrete, rather than a general construction crew. This is crucial to avoid execution errors!

9 Implementation - construction and installation

After the contract is signed, heavy equipment enters the construction site. This is the most glamorous stage, involving earthwork, dense rebar, and precision spraying and hand troweling of concrete. It's here that the designer and contractor work closest together to ensure that each ramp and wall has the perfect geometry to guarantee a smooth ride.

10 Acceptance and commissioning procedure

The completion of construction begins the acceptance process, which is a formal confirmation of the quality and safety of the investment. A key element is an audit by a certified appraiser, who verifies the facility's compliance with PN-EN 14974 (including verification of safety zones, absence of sharp edges or smoothness of concrete joints). At the same time, the authority must submit a notice of completion of construction to the relevant Building Inspectorate. Only after obtaining a legally binding permit for use and the transfer of the facility by the contractor to the administrator is the investment officially opened to users.

Summary

The construction of a skatepark is a marathon, not a sprint. It is a road where the needs of users, the strenuous budget processes of the authority and the experience of experts meet. We, as Techramps, are the connector - we help officials get through these stages, and we guarantee users a first-class facility.

Want to initiate construction in your neighborhood? Remember that the key is professional preparation and patience. Show the process to your municipality and let them know that we are there to support you from the first sketch to final acceptance.
