Sport Facilities XXI Century

Spot, skatepark, beach....

In the urban sports community, these words are often lumped together as "a place to ride." However, for us - the creators who shape the urban space for Riders - each of these terms carries a specific and different meaning. In this short article, we want to highlight the similarities, clarify the differences and show what it means for users.

Spot - a natural place to ride

Aspot is a place that was not created with skate or BMX riders in mind, but has become popular thanks to its users. It can be a step under an office building, the walls at a shopping center, a wide sidewalk, a city square or a concrete driveway under an office building.

Spot features:

  • is not designed as a sports facility,
  • is often located in public spaces,
  • is sometimes used creatively,
  • has its own atmosphere, history and community around it.

Spots are the heart of skate culture. It's where videos, tricks and the history of the local scene are made. Not every riding spot is a skatepark - and it is the spots that remind us of this best

Skatepark - a facility designed for urban sports

A skatepark is a specially designed space with obstacles for skateboarding, scooters and BMX bikes. It is designed to provide safety, durability and functionality for users of different levels.

Characteristic elements of the skatepark:

  • bowls, quarterpipes, funboxes, spines, handrails, grindboxes,
  • beginner, intermediate and PRO zones,
  • planned ride flow,
  • safety standards and appropriate materials.

The skatepark is a "safe spot" because it gives predictability and allows skills to be developed in controlled conditions.

Plaza is a hybrid - a skatepark in the form of an urban, urban space, inspired by real spots. It looks like a modern public square, while being optimized for riding.

What sets plaza apart:

  • walls, manual pads, steps, handrails and hubby as in the city center,
  • minimalism and concrete as the dominant material,
  • natural integration with urban architecture,
  • often serves a recreational function for non-riders as well.

The Plaza is the answer to the needs of skaters who love the atmosphere of the street, but require the quality and safety of a skatepark.

Why is it important to distinguish between these concepts?

From a design and urban perspective, it's very important:

  • A skatepark will be best for the general public, schools and competitions.
  • A plaza will work if the goal is integration into the urban space and modern design.
  • We don't build spots - spots are created by themselves, but we can design spaces that preserve their atmosphere.

Conscious use of these differences allows us to better plan investments, optimize budgets and create spaces that support the culture of urban sports.

Summary

  • Spot - arises naturally, is part of the city.
  • Skatepark - designed sports facility.
  • Plaza - an urban place for riding, combining urban aesthetics with skatepark functionality.

Each of these spaces is different, but they all form the rich fabric of skate and BMX culture. The key is to properly match the form to the needs of the local community.
